Carl “Jimmy” Burrill’s life revolved around baseball as a distinguished player and a dedicated coach. He was born in 1939 in the Scotch Hill neighborhood of Westbrook. He lived his entire life in Westbrook, attending local schools and participating in many activities and organizations. He was a proud Westbrook High School's Class of 1957 graduate and even prouder to call Westbrook his home. Mr. Burrill was well known for his devotion to the local sports scene.
Playing Career
Burrill’s baseball journey began in his youth, culminating in his participation in the 1951 Little League World Series with the Suburban All-Stars. During high school, he was instrumental in the team securing Telegram League championships in 1955 and 1957. He pitched a no-hitter and recorded 16 strikeouts in his final high school game.
Coaching Career
Transitioning from player to mentor, Burrill dedicated over two decades to coaching. He began with four seasons in the Babe Ruth League before taking the helm of the Stephen W. Manchester Post American Legion team for 21 years. Under his guidance, the team clinched the state Legion title in 1981, narrowly missing a spot in the American Legion World Series. Burrill’s coaching philosophy emphasized playing the game correctly, earning him respect and admiration from players and peers.
Legacy
Burrill’s commitment to baseball extended beyond formal coaching. He was a familiar presence at local games, always ready to offer advice to those eager to improve. His profound impact on the community was recognized with his induction into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. Burrill’s life epitomized dedication to baseball and his community, leaving an enduring mark on Westbrook’s sporting heritage.
