The Westbrook Baseball Foundation is proud to announce that Charles Tanguay, a senior at Westbrook High School, has been awarded the 2025 Jimmy Burrill Memorial Baseball Scholarship. This $2,000 scholarship recognizes student-athletes who demonstrate commitment to the game of baseball, academic excellence, community service, and strong character—qualities Charles embodies both on and off the field.
Charles is ranked in the top 10% of his class, maintains a GPA above 100%, and has been a four-year member of the Westbrook High School baseball program. He also serves as a leader in the award-winning marching band and percussion ensemble and has earned recognition in STEM and engineering competitions. A well-rounded student, Charles plans to attend the University of Maine at Orono to study mechanical engineering.
In his essay, Charles reflected on the challenges that shaped him, including a pivotal moment when he was placed on the freshman team as a sophomore. Rather than feeling defeated, he used the experience to fuel his growth and returned the next season as a starting varsity player. “That moment destroyed me as an athlete and, most importantly, fueled me to become the player I am today,” he wrote.
Charles believes that true success in baseball isn’t just about wins. “If a team comes together as a family,” he wrote, “success is inevitable.”
The Jimmy Burrill Memorial Scholarship honors the memory and legacy of longtime coach Jimmy Burrill, who was dedicated to developing young players both as athletes and individuals. Coach Burrill’s core belief—that baseball teaches life lessons in perseverance, teamwork, and integrity—continues to guide the spirit of this scholarship.
